BEST PART ABOUT A MAGAZINE STYLIST'S JOB? GETTING TO PLAY IN EVERY STYLE YOU CAN IMAGINE AND SEEING IN ACTION THE CREATIVE JUICES OF THE HOMEOWNERS BEHIND IT! The beautiful Kohanzo family, who live just outside of Chicago, were the genius creators of The Land of Nod, a children's furniture company that was so wildly successful it was scooped up by Crate&Barrel and eventually renamed Crate&Kids. Michelle and Dave's mix of classic and vintage and boho and contemporary just blew us out of the water. After all, most homeowners wouldn't hang a paper maché deer head against a modern black wallpaper, inside a vintage gold frame overlooking taxidermy birds, resting on a red moose tablecloth... ...and certainly not right around the corner from a dining room displaying grandma's china across from a wall papered in andy warhol flowers... And maybe it's just me, but I've never owned a den that featured Peruvian fiber wall art above a mid-century floor lamp and a window shade fashioned out of what looks like vintage Marimekko fabric. ...nor designed a parlor that boasted a vintage French poster, a Scottish shortbread tin, and an assortment of pillows gathered from Etsy, all resting on an Ikea carpet from the kid's department. And call me old-fashioned but I never upholstered a chair in six different fabrics, decoupaged a map of the mid-west on my coffee table, or counted a yellow vinyl suitcase as part of my living room decor. I never even had a pink kitchen... ...or a day-glo pink alley cat in my bedroom But I confess... there's a chance I just might have made a heart out of polaroids-- if I had thought of it! Here's to creativity and living outside the box! All photography by Mark Lohman and styling by moi. SO SCROLL ALL THE WAY DOWN ,
